How To Replace A Bathroom Toilet

Replacing a bathroom toilet may seem like a daunting task, but with the right tools and a little know-how, it's a job that most homeowners can tackle themselves. By following these step-by-step instructions, you can save yourself the cost of hiring a plumber and have your new toilet installed in no time.

Tools You'll Need:

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Plumber's putty or wax ring
  • Toilet flange bolts
  • Toilet wax ring tool (optional)
  • Bucket
  • Sponge or rags

Steps:

1. Shut Off the Water Supply

Locate the water supply valve behind the toilet and turn it clockwise to shut off the water. Flush the toilet to empty the tank and bowl.

2. Disconnect the Water Supply Line

Use an adjustable wrench to disconnect the water supply line from the fill valve at the bottom of the tank. Allow any remaining water to drain into the bucket.

3. Remove the Old Toilet

Loosen the nuts holding the toilet to the floor with an adjustable wrench. Carefully rock the toilet back and forth to break the seal between the wax ring and the flange. Lift the toilet straight up and remove it.

4. Clean the Toilet Flange

Use a sponge or rags to clean any old wax or debris from the toilet flange. The surface should be smooth and free of any obstructions.

5. Apply Plumber's Putty or a Wax Ring

Apply a bead of plumber's putty or place a wax ring around the base of the toilet flange. Make sure the seal is complete and there are no gaps.

6. Install the Toilet

Carefully lower the new toilet onto the flange, aligning the bolts with the holes in the base of the toilet. Tighten the nuts by hand, then use an adjustable wrench to secure them further. Do not overtighten.

7. Reconnect the Water Supply Line

Attach the water supply line to the fill valve on the bottom of the tank. Tighten the connection with an adjustable wrench.

8. Turn on the Water Supply

Turn the water supply valve behind the toilet counterclockwise to turn the water back on. Check for any leaks around the base of the toilet or the water supply line.

9. Flush the Toilet

Flush the toilet several times to fill the tank and bowl. Check for any leaks or issues with the flushing mechanism.

Tips:

  • If the old wax ring is stuck to the toilet flange, use a putty knife or a utility knife to carefully remove it.
  • If you have a tile floor, place a piece of plywood or cardboard under the toilet to protect the tiles from scratches.
  • Double-check all connections before turning on the water supply to prevent leaks.
  • If you encounter any difficulties, do not hesitate to contact a licensed plumber for assistance.
By following these steps, you can successfully replace your bathroom toilet and enjoy a fresh and functional bathroom.
