How To Clear Bathroom Sink Drain

A clogged bathroom sink drain is a common plumbing problem that can be easily fixed with a few simple steps. If you're experiencing slow drainage or standing water in your sink, follow these instructions to effectively clear the clog.

1. Remove the Drain Stopper

Start by removing the drain stopper. Most stoppers can be unscrewed by hand, but you may need to use a pair of pliers if it's stuck. Once the stopper is removed, you'll have access to the drain opening.

2. Inspect the Drain Hole

Look down the drain hole and check for any visible debris or blockages. Hair, soap scum, or other small objects can easily accumulate and cause a clog. If you see any obstructions, try to remove them with your fingers or a pair of tweezers.

3. Use a Drain Snake

If you can't remove the blockage manually, you can try using a drain snake. A drain snake is a flexible tool with a barbed end that can reach into the drain and dislodge clogs. Insert the drain snake into the drain opening and slowly push it down. Rotate the snake as you push to help loosen the blockage.

4. Pour Boiling Water Down the Drain

Boiling water can help dissolve grease and soap scum that may be contributing to the clog. Bring a pot of water to a boil and carefully pour it down the drain. Allow the water to sit for a few minutes before flushing it out with cold water.

5. Use a Baking Soda and Vinegar Solution

Baking soda and vinegar can create a fizzing reaction that can help break down clogs. Pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by half a cup of white vinegar. Allow the solution to sit for 15-30 minutes before flushing it out with hot water.

6. Use a Commercial Drain Cleaner

If the above methods don't work, you can try using a commercial drain cleaner. Follow the instructions on the product label carefully, as some drain cleaners can be corrosive. Be sure to wear gloves and eye protection when using chemical drain cleaners.
