How to Change a Cartridge in a Bathroom Faucet

Replacing a bathroom faucet cartridge is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a matter of minutes. A cartridge is a small, cylindrical device that controls the flow of water through the faucet. Over time, cartridges can become worn or damaged, leading to leaks or other problems. If you are experiencing any issues with your bathroom faucet, changing the cartridge is a good place to start.

Tools You'll Need:

  • Replacement cartridge
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Bucket or bowl
  • Rags

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Shut off the water supply: Before you begin, turn off the water supply to the faucet. There should be two shut-off valves located under the sink. Turn the valves clockwise until they are completely closed.

2. Remove the handle: Using the Phillips head screwdriver, remove the screws that are holding the faucet handle in place. Once the screws are removed, the handle can be pulled off of the faucet.

3. Remove the cartridge nut: Underneath the handle, you will see a large nut that is holding the cartridge in place. Use the adjustable wrench to loosen the nut and remove it.

4. Remove the cartridge: Once the nut is removed, you can pull the cartridge straight out of the faucet. If the cartridge is stuck, you can use a pair of pliers to gently pry it out.

5. Install the new cartridge: Insert the new cartridge into the faucet and push it in until it is fully seated. Make sure that the cartridge is aligned correctly before you tighten the nut.

6. Tighten the cartridge nut: Use the adjustable wrench to tighten the cartridge nut until it is snug. Do not overtighten the nut, as this could damage the cartridge.

7. Reinstall the handle: Place the faucet handle back on the faucet and tighten the screws that are holding it in place. Make sure that the handle is tight enough so that it does not move when you turn it.

8. Turn on the water supply: Turn on the water supply to the faucet and check for any leaks. If there are any leaks, you may need to tighten the cartridge nut further.

Tips:

  • When choosing a replacement cartridge, make sure that it is the correct size and type for your faucet.
  • If you are not comfortable changing the cartridge yourself, you can always call a plumber for assistance.
  • To prevent future leaks, it is a good idea to replace the cartridge every few years.
