Bathroom Sink Clogged With Hair - A Simple Guide to Unclogging It

A clogged bathroom sink is a common plumbing issue that can be frustrating and inconvenient. Hair is one of the most common culprits of clogged bathroom sinks, as it can easily accumulate in the drain and form a clog. If you find yourself with a bathroom sink clogged with hair, there are a few simple steps you can take to unclog it yourself.

Before you start, gather a few tools and materials that you will need:

  • Plunger
  • Wire clothes hanger
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Bucket or bowl

Once you have gathered your tools and materials, follow these steps to unclog your bathroom sink:

  1. Start by trying to plunge the clog. Place the plunger over the drain and fill the sink with enough water to cover the cup of the plunger. Plunge vigorously up and down for several minutes. If the clog is not cleared, move on to the next step.
  2. Use a wire clothes hanger to remove the hair. Straighten out a wire clothes hanger and bend one end into a small hook. Insert the hook into the drain and try to snag the hair. Once you have snagged some hair, pull it out and discard it. Repeat this process until the clog is cleared.
  3. Pour baking soda and vinegar down the drain. Baking soda and vinegar are both natural drain cleaners that can help to dissolve hair and other gunk. Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by 1/2 cup of vinegar. Allow the mixture to sit for 15 minutes, then flush the drain with hot water.
  4. If the clog is still not cleared, you may need to remove the P-trap. The P-trap is the U-shaped pipe that connects the sink drain to the main drain line. To remove the P-trap, loosen the nuts that hold it in place and carefully remove it. Once the P-trap is removed, you should be able to see the clog. Use your fingers or a pair of pliers to remove the hair and other debris, then reassemble the P-trap and tighten the nuts.

If you have tried all of the above steps and the clog is still not cleared, you may need to call a plumber. A plumber will have the tools and expertise to clear even the most stubborn clogs.

To prevent your bathroom sink from getting clogged with hair in the future, follow these tips:

  • Install a hair catcher in the drain. A hair catcher is a small device that fits over the drain and catches hair before it can go down the drain.
  • Brush your hair regularly. Brushing your hair regularly will help to remove loose hair that could otherwise end up in your sink drain.
  • Avoid shaving in the sink. Shaving in the sink can create a lot of hair that can clog the drain.
  • Clean your sink drain regularly. Pouring a cup of boiling water down the drain once a week will help to keep the drain clear of hair and other debris.
