How to Refinish a Bathroom Vanity
Bathroom vanities undergo a lot of wear and tear, from water damage to dents and scratches. If your vanity is looking worse for wear, don't despair. Refinishing it is a relatively easy and inexpensive way to give it a fresh look. Here's how to do it.
1. Gather your materials
You will need the following materials:
- Sandpaper (120-grit, 220-grit)
- Tack cloth
- Primer
- Paint
- Polyurethane
- Brush or roller
- Screwdriver
2. Remove the hardware
Start by removing all of the hardware from the vanity, including the knobs, handles, and drawer pulls. This will make it easier to sand and paint the vanity.
3. Sand the vanity
Use 120-grit sandpaper to sand the vanity in the direction of the grain. This will help to remove any old paint or finish. Once you have sanded the entire vanity, go over it again with 220-grit sandpaper to smooth out any rough spots.
4. Clean the vanity
Use a tack cloth to remove any dust or debris from the vanity. This will help the primer and paint to adhere better.
5. Apply primer
Apply a coat of primer to the vanity using a brush or roller. This will help the paint to adhere better and will also help to prevent the wood from absorbing too much moisture.
6. Paint the vanity
Once the primer has dried, apply two coats of paint to the vanity. Allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next.
7. Apply polyurethane
Once the paint has dried, apply a coat of polyurethane to the vanity. This will help to protect the paint from water damage and will also give the vanity a glossy finish.
8. Reinstall the hardware
Once the polyurethane has dried, reinstall the hardware. Your vanity is now refinished and looking like new!
Tips
- If your vanity has any large dents or scratches, you can fill them in with wood filler before sanding.
- If you are painting the vanity a different color, it is important to use a primer that is compatible with the paint.
- Allow each coat of primer, paint, and polyurethane to dry completely before applying the next coat.
- If you are not sure how to refinish a bathroom vanity, you can always hire a professional.
